The steps after you file
- The claim deadline passes. The administrator checks every claim and may write to people whose claim needs more information.
- Final approval hearing. The judge decides whether the settlement is fair. It's often scheduled weeks before or after the claim deadline; the notice gives the date.
- The appeal window. After final approval, people who objected usually have 30 days to appeal.
- The settlement becomes final once that window closes with no appeal.
- Payments go out, typically within one to three months of becoming final, by the method you chose on the claim form.
What delays payment
- Appeals. An appeal can hold every payment for a year or more until a higher court decides.
- Many claims. Checking hundreds of thousands of claims takes time, especially when some ask for proof.
- A later approval date. Courts sometimes move the hearing.
How to check on a payment
The official settlement website posts updates, often a "payment status" or "important dates" page. Look for the claim confirmation you saved, and check that your email or address is current, since that's where the payment goes.
ClaimWell lets you record the claims you filed and when you got paid, and shows each settlement's approval hearing. Check which settlements fit you.
